The Pirate in Me
by Bryan Cohen

I made my way across the seven seas
And found it bred my insecurities,
With fear and anger pillaging inside
I felt the need to duck and run and hide,
When far off course I saw a treasure rich,
Full not of silver, gold, and well-made stitch,
But something deeper that could rightly cure
The inner anti-pirate strong and pure.
Quickly bringing spring upon her cable
We made our way to wealthy prize of fable.
The jagged rocks and sea tossed to and fro,
Despite our trials we soon called out “Land ho!”
We forged a path toward this booty fair
I hardly had an ounce of strength to spare,
But with goal of courage on my mind
I pushed myself with all that I could find.
We came upon a clearing that had to be
The reason that we’d left our well-known sea.
Upon an X, my men and I broke ground
Until a chest of untold wealth was found.
The unknown prosp’rous box began to hatch
Before my men and I had touched a latch
And much to our chagrin it held a sheet
Of old parchment, with scripted print so neat:
“The fear you had was eas’ly pushed away
By the power of the goal you had today
Continue putting treasure in your midst;
A mind with purpose conquers any fist.”
The men who understood the chest grew wise,
Our lives improved as we could now surmise,
A truth that hit us like a whiskey sip;
It was the journey there that made the trip.
